ÁLVARO GODOY

Almost everything I know I learned directly or indirectly through the internet (I have a T-shirt that says “The internet saved my life”). My relationship with screens and drawing is equally close and intimate: they emerged almost at the same time. What I saw, I drew, and at a certain point I learned to digitally alter what I was drawing. Those hyper-processed images gained ground and became a way of making and thinking. Today I work in a constant, sustained tension between drawing and sculpture, between the plane and the object. In practically all of my works, the resulting image or object is a layering of analog and digital processes.

For several years now I have been working with 3D printing, laser engraving, and CNC drawing plotters to translate flat, intangible information into objects. I have robots that use charcoal to draw. My intention is to camouflage the passage of the machine: to leave it visible but not obvious.

I am intrigued by the new relationships between technology and nature. Currently, and perhaps more than ever, these two fields feed into one another. Technology imitates nature to solve problems of efficiency, the acquisition of nutrients and energy, alternative forms of organization, and ways of perceiving the world (interlocking structures, folding, etc.). And with the help of technology, nature survives and adapts to environments in which it otherwise could not—at least not at the speed that is demanded of it. This frontier of knowledge, experiments, failures, and successes spills over into ideas that often belong to the realm of science fiction. This fiction (now almost faithful to reality) sustains me.

Buenos Aires, 1994. Lives and works in Buenos Aires.

Álvaro Godoy’s artistic training includes the Artistas x Artistas scholarship at Fundación El Mirador and the MDA program by artist Diana Aisenberg (Buenos Aires, 2020). He exhibited at OHNO Gallery, Cazadores Foundation, and Espacio Dasein. In 2024, he had his first solo exhibition, LA MITAD ENTRE LA PARED Y EL INFINITO, at Valerie’s Factory gallery, Buenos Aires, 2024.

His work brings together drawing, painting, sculpture, music, programming, and biology, exploring the intersections and boundaries between these techniques. Influences ranging from Federico Klemm’s El banquete telemático to heavy metal music, life in and out of the digital realm, botany, and robotics inform his intuitive, experimental studio practice, which functions as a laboratory of research. “I am interested in integrating robotics into sensitive fields like drawing and in understanding and participating in the artistic collaboration between a machine and a human.”

ÁLVARO GODOY

Buenos Aires, 1994.
